= Effectiveness, Efficiency, Compliance and User Satisfaction

Ergonomics consultant in South Africa ErgoFocus conducts a usability study on proposed changes in the work place enabling a company to make an informed decisions on the Ergonomic status of these, often expensive, investments in terms of Functionality and Compliance for the intended user population.

Proposed changes in the work place can range from implementing new equipment, tools and machinery or adapting a work process to accommodate a wider range of users.

For example, investing in a machine with a higher production output, does not automatically result in a higher production output, when the operator cannot keep up the pace due to unforeseen physical and/or mental factors.

A usability study can save a company time and money and prevent the following:

  • Delays in projects
  • A lower procutivity due to unforeseen operational circumstances
  • Extra costs for adaptation
  • A lower design quality
  • Increase in waste
  • Non-Compliance
  • Decreased usability

ErgoFocus (Pty) Ltd. can assist in conducting practical Usability (Functionality & Compliance) evaluations on:

Office Environment: Industrial environment:
Office Furniture (Chairs, Desks, etc) Industrial Furniture (e.g. stools, stands, work benches, etc.)
Office Equipment and Tools (such as footrests, document stands, etc.)  Industrial Equipment and Tools (e.g.bag lifters, forklifts, trucks, machinery, etc.)
Office Lay-out plans (let an ergonomic eye go through the proposed plans) Lay-out plans (e.g. process lines, workstation set ups, palletising areas, etc.)

Usability or Functionality is a subset of ergonomics and human factors that focuses on making things usable. Usability can encompass making things usable for a wider population, such as making a handle smaller, so both children and adults are able to operate it. It also includes making a system or a man-machine-system to do more things. For example, how an office employee's productivity has been improved by the increased usability of a computer over a typewriter.usability-example2

Usability is simply a methodological (i.e. science, engineering, design, etc.) process of improving the use of an item or system. Usability focuses on the interaction between the human and the use, and looks to make it better.

Ergonomics can focus on general human behaviour in relation to technology (such as studies of how people react to various type of colours and sizes), on a generic type of product (such as laptops), on specific environments or product designs as a whole, or on some specific design aspects of a particular environment or product.

Depending on objectives, the results of an ergonomic/human factor study can include suggestions on how to redesign the object of study, or how to setup a general guideline for designing such an object.

The Process of an individual assessment:

  • A consultant will come to the client's office to conduct the assessment at the employees' workstation.
  • An individual office assessment takes between 30 to 60 minutes.
  • During the assessment, a task analysis and a workstation lay-out assessment are conducted.
  • During the assessment, employee behavioural patterns are analysed.
  • An employee instruction is provided and the workstation is adapted, where possible.
  • An easy to understand feedback report will be returned to the employer (and employee) stating recommendations and equipment supplier sources.

accessAs companies are striving to employ more and more employees that are in any way ‘physically or sensory challenged’, the need has arisen to assess whether the company’s premises are actually suited to accommodate such employees.

Especially companies that are established in older buildings may not be equipped to guarantee an employee’s safety in this regard. In an access audit an analysis is made regarding access to, on and from the company’s premises for the employees. Keeping building regulations and international best practices in mind, an access audit provides a company with feedback regarding the suitability and safety of it's facilities to accommodate these employees.

Depending on the specific nature of the physical and/or sensory challenge or challenges, the following areas are analysed accordingly:

      • specialised work station set ups
      • walkways
      • stairs
      • elevators
      • bathrooms
      • board rooms
      • coffee corners
      • lunch facilities
      • emergency routes.

‘ErgoFocus provided us with great service. We required in-depth scan done to establish whether our building can accommodate physically challenged, visually and hearing impaired people. They kept to agreed timelines, understood our brief and provided a comprehensive report. All in all, we were happy and would gladly refer others to the business’ Tshepiso Chocho, Human Capital Generalist - SASRIA
